Rise of the Nazis

In 1930 Germany was a liberal democracy, with elections, parliament and the rule of law. Just four years later, democracy is dead, Germany's leader is a dictator and its government is in the hands of murderers. This is the story of how this happened.

Chancellor Hitler works to dismantle the German state; the Nazis have power to ban free speech and burn books; Jewish people, gay people and those with anti-Nazi beliefs begin to disappear.

Adolf Hitler had been chancellor of Germany for just under a year, and it was a challenging balancing act, between president Paul von Hindenburg and the vice chancellor Franz von Papen, and the Nazis' own stormtroopers.
